internships

Hi all,

Wanted to share a few fully-virtual opportunities that are open to our students this fall. Please share and forward any questions directly to idiaz@marinschools.org.

The first is a speaker series that can be drop-in or done as a complete series. Students who complete the series and want to earn School to Career credit should let us know in advance, as we will ask for reflections from each speaker. The first speaker is this Wednesday, September 16, from 4:00-5:00 p.m. Please see the schedule and registration link below.

We are also offering a six-week Virtual Job Shadow Program that is more like a class through the www.virtualjobshadow.complatform. A flyer is attached. Students will meet on Zoom on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00-5:00 p.m. beginning October 5. They will be able to watch unlimited career videos, take career assessments, create a resume, a LinkedIn profile, student labor market data, create a postsecondary plan, and view the same guest speakers as listed below. Students can earn up to 36 STC hours, which converts to 2.0 elective credits. The registration link is bit.ly/MarinVJS

Naviance

Due to budget cuts as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the district was forced to discontinue our school's subscription to Naviance. Instead, you can use other websites for some of the most valuable features on Naviance such as:

Career Exploration: California Colleges or California Career Zones

College Research (all U.S. colleges/universities): Niche.com or California Colleges For more recommendations on resources on researching colleges, read the "Developing Your College List" presentations below. Under College application presentations 19/20. Or register for the Zoom meeting on Mon. Sept. 14 at 10:00 here. or check page 51 of the College Planning Guide (also on the CCC page of the school website).

Autobiographical SketchIf you plan to ask your counselor to write a letter of recommendation this year, please fill out your Senior Autobiographical Sketch by October 1st. All requests for recommendations must be received by your counselor at least two weeks before the deadline. You will need a counselor letter of rec for most private and out-of-state colleges, but not for the UCs or CSUs. You will also need 2 letters of rec from teachers (usually English or History, AND Math or Science), so ask your teachers directly if they'd be willing to write you a letter of rec.

College Rep Visits

Virtual College Representative visits 2020/2021 - Marin Academy  (MA), has invited our SRHS seniors and juniors to attend MA's already-scheduled virtual college representative visits from 2:25-3:05 pm weekdays. These Zoom talks are great opportunities to learn about many different colleges and to ask them questions. Please view the list of college visits for the next 2 weeks, and sign up for those you are interested. SAT/ACT Information

Most colleges, Including the UC's, have decided to become "test-optional" for fall 2020 applicants due to the coronavirus, meaning that they will consider your scores if you have them, but won't penalize you if you do not. Check out the list of test-optional colleges.   The CSUs absolutely will not consider any SAT or ACT scores.

However, if you are applying to any elite colleges or highly competitive majors within a college, test scores might help your chances of admission. Call or email the admissions offices at those colleges to inquire about whether they prefer for you to submit scores. If so, you may want to register for and take the SAT or ACT this fall. They are offered every month, though you may have to go to a test site farther away from Marin.

If you decide to take the test, be sure to spend several weeks preparing for it. Khan Academy and act.org have fantastic, FREE, independent study online courses. Go to: Khan Academy and Free ACT prep. Or prep with a good study guidebook, such as the most recent The Official SAT Study Guide or The Real ACT Prep Guide.
